Description
Introduced in 1971, the Explorer II was conceived for a specific breed of adventurer: cave explorers and polar researchers who, deprived of natural light, could lose track of day and night. Its defining feature is a fixed 24-hour bezel read against an orange 24-hour hand, allowing the wearer to tell morning from evening at a glance. Utilitarian where other Rolex watches are decorative, it has become a cult favorite among those who prize function and understated toolwatch character.
The 42mm case is forged from Rolex’s stainless steel and topped by a fixed steel bezel with engraved 24-hour markings, mounted on the brushed and polished Oyster bracelet. The crisp white “Polar” dial, named for the model’s expedition heritage, carries bold black-outlined markers and hands for legible contrast, with a date beneath the Cyclops at three o’clock. That single flash of orange on the 24-hour hand nods to the original 1971 reference.
